Natural orange diamonds

Natural orange diamonds are considered to be exceptionally rare and extremely expensive especially those that are of a pure color such as Fancy Intense Orange and Fancy Vivid Orange. These diamonds are mainly mined from Australia and South Africa.

In fact pure orange diamonds are said to be one of the rarest and most expensive of diamonds and coveted by all well known collectors of diamonds. Most of the the diamonds are pique and they usually have a yellow or orange fluorescence. Due to its rarity a pure orange-diamond can be an excellent investment.

Diamonds are available in practically all shades of colors with each one varying in its concentration of color varying from light to dark shades of a particular color. Typically natural fancy colored diamonds are rated according to their hue namely yellow, orange, red, brown, green or blue; their intensity namely vivid, intense etc. It is assumed that the greater the intensity of the diamond the more exclusive and expensive it will be.

When rating natural fancy color diamonds the GIA utilizes nine grades namely faint, light very light, fancy light, fancy, fancy dark, fancy deep, fancy intense and fancy vivid. Orange diamonds come in a variation of colors namely Fancy Brown Orange, Faint Orange, Yellowish Orange etc. The diamonds with hues are cheaper than the pure orange colored diamonds.

The diamond that resembles a Halloween pumpkin is one of the most sought after diamonds in the world and it can sell at a far greater price than yellow diamonds. An 8-93 carat Fancy Intense Orange diamond was sold at Sotheby's for $1.9 million. In fact there are several well known orange colored diamonds. One 5.54 carat Pumpkin Diamond was sold at an auction at Sotheby's for $1.3 million which he mounted on a ring that was later worn by Halle Berry for the Academy Awards in the year 2002 when she won the best actress award. This ring is currently said to be worth over three million dollars.

Today there are certain treatment processes that are being done to alter the color of diamonds, so when you plan to purchase a natural color diamond like an orange diamond, it is imperative that the word "natural" is imprinted on its grading report, because this is what informs people that it is a 'natural' color and that it is not a treated diamond. It is vital to determine the value of the color of the stone.
